Netbean6 connect to my database

This is a new feature added to NB6. Some of developer will have a few application running while working with database and IDE. Can this feature replace the basic SQL query tool?

http://www.netbeans.org/kb/60/ide/mysql.html will give you a pretty good start and feel for this feature. Out of box I was able query data and even copy the row of data! But... but you can't edit the cell if you want to change say "Y" to a "N"... I know I can write query for that, but I am lazy ;)

Another thing I notice (with about 1 hours using this feature) it DISCONNECT from database!!!! Is there anyway to keep the connection alive? There gotta be an option to do this I keep on getting the error (see screen shot below) ... I had to first disconnect than connect again.

instead of keep on blogging I will try to see if I can found a solution to this problem and post the solution.

gotta run...

NB6 lots of features but can it perform? --testing in progress

My background on my road to Netbean6.

@ my day job I am using RAD7 like many developers this the "official" tool.
@ home/side job I had been using Eclipse 3.2 with Instantiations's WindowBuilderPro it's pretty powerful GUI builder.... but I have been slowly moving to Netbeans the past year (since NB5). Since some of the projects are Swing based... if you have not create GUI from Netbeans you can't use NB's Matisse (this is due to NB's GUI uses some XML *.form to store extra information). But if you have decoupled the GUI from the business and backend it's pretty easy to draw with new NB (unless you have a screen with 10 different tables with button covers all extra spaces, than good luck).

Here the link to new Netbean 6 features, there are too many for me to list... some don't really care for.

With that say let's install this bad boy!
First if you download the full pack you can select the packs you need... 470 MB!!

Quicken 2008 == Quicken 2007 == Quicken 2006

Why it's always this way.... add more "feature" and paid (see vista)

Based on the few reviews I have seen of Quicken 2008, it doesn’t appear to have many new features that compel me to replace Quicken 2006. I usually upgrade every other year or so anyway. I have used Quicken since 1999 and have found it to be an invaluable tool to track my spending and manage my finances. Each upgrade I have found it to be a little more improved, but doesn't always translate into functional or a better quality product. I will usually spring for the Premier version as it has better investing functions. So I guess I will hold on to my $ and not upgrade this year.

I hate to say it, this release is a little slow compare to 5.5 maybe a good excuse to get an upgrade?!

Dumb and dumber...

What can I say... hire a consultant to handle your sensitive information and it was pass to an intern who makes $10.50 an hour. Everybody point fingers at different direction does that makes okay?

A backup tape was stolen from his car last month containing at least 770,000 social security numbers (with the corresponding names) for Ohio taxpayers. It also contained the social security numbers for another 64,000 state employees. Today the intern issued a statement with his side of the story.

bye bye Netflix (for now at least).

lost some subscribers to Blockbuster?
http://business.bostonherald.com/businessNews/view.bg?articleid=1013160

http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2007/07/24/ap3946471.html

well, I don't really make decision base on the stock price. But I do like Blockbuster's idea of mail + drop off at the store. And I did have some of Netflix DVD from out of my states...which takes about 3 days to arrive...and 3 more days to return :-( As long as the price is good... WHY NOT!

it's been great testing out Netflix and Blockbuster... I think I watched enough movies.

I want it NOW (Blockbuster only)

If you do live near by a Blockbuster and you don't use this "service" shame on you!

Why would you want to stop by a blockbuster store near you?
1) there is e-coupon (I think once a month you can rent from the store).
2) store checkin for you mail DVD, so they can sent you another one without the lag of mail.
3) sick of browsing for DVD? Well.... they do have laptop setup for you also.

looks like Blockbuster win this round.

Web 2.0 (Blockbuster vs Netflix)

not sure if Blockbuster has any plan to upgrade their site... but I found Netflix's site to be more friendly in suggesting movies to watch. I do enjoy a short preview and customer suggestion. They also have a friend and family area...which is some what of social network setup.

So base on that, I would say Netflix is doing much better here.

Real Project, real result

It's always fun to hear about why/how a project select the technology to use. It could be cost, resource, scheduling ... policy?

http://www.kerika.com/2007/06/why-we-chose-java.html

.....
  • Using C or C++ would have resulted a lot of platform-specifc coding for the graphics and file management: in other words, we wouldn't be building a cross-platform application, but rather building the same application repeatedly, and painfully, for each platform.
  • Using Flash or SVG would likely have given us a great user interface, but there was, and remains, a dearth of programmers who are proficient in these platforms, which would have made recruiting a harder task, and, more importantly, there wasn't a rich ecosystem of third-party and open-source tools for Flash and SVG.
  • Using the .NET platform would have resulted in Kerika looking like just another WinForm application – in other words, looking like all our clunky competitors!
.....

IDE news!!! Netbeans and Eclipse

No it's not a race, choose your own tool for the project.

Netbeans 6.0 M10
http://www.netbeans.org/community/releases/60/index.html

Eclipse also release it's IDE code name Europa 3.3
http://www.infoq.com/news/2007/06/eclipse-europa
also release are all of it's projects.... VE seems to be missing from the list :-(

The mail must go through (Netflix vs Blockbuster)

No, I am not signing the children's song.

If we only compare the mail distribution center...
Currently Blockbuster has 35 distribution centers across the United States.
Netflix has lot more http://www.listology.com/netflix_tracker_reports.cfm?report=centers
couldn't found the offical number for Netflix. Of course if you are near by the distribution center ... maybe you'll get it within 2 days... (which is my average time).

Day 2 1/2 blockbuster vs netflix ( that was fast!)

I got my DVDs!!!! I guess there is a blockbuster or netflix distribution center around me. I quickly watch one DVD from each vendor and return today (Friday). Let's see who will receive and return back to me the fast ;-)

the return envelop is a little different ....
Blockbuster: the envelop is smaller compare to Netflix and it has the title of the DVD on the label!!! so if I have 3 DVDs and accidentally switch the envelope what will happen?

Netflix: the envelop is RED! The title of the DVD is a bar code shown on a small window of the RED envelope. Geez, it's red enough....even my dog would know it's Netflix.

I wont test blockbuster's store pickup or checkin function until later on, for now just testing the speed of USPS.

Day 1 and 2 blockbuster vs netflix

Signed up on Tuesday night (6/12), both vendor have shipped the DVD. Which DVD will get to me first?

I signed up for the 1 DVD unlimited for $9.99 for both. But Blockbuster has the 3 DVD for 1 month (you must cancel before 1 month or get charge). Both has sent out email that the DVD(s) are on the way.

To add your DVD into the queue is pretty easy, Blockbuster gives you option to buy the DVD. Netflix has an area for you to buy "used" DVD, but I haven't try this feature yet.

small guy vs MS (bullying your user, nothing new here)

reading this article http://www.theregister.com/2007/06/05/microsoft_mvp_threats/ makes me wondering what is M$ trying to do?? I better not "say" much ... :-) you can read and laugh

.... his cherished status did not last. In December 2005, he started getting emails from a Microsoft executive called Jason Weber. The problem was that TestDriven.NET supported the Express edition of Visual Studio. Express is the cut-down version that anyone can download for free from the Microsoft website. It is limited in various ways, and is intended only for hobbyists and students. Everyone else is supposed to shell out for the paid-for versions.

To follow this story please visit Jamie Cansdale's blog and see the email/scanned letters! I will just paste a short comment below from Jamie's blog. To fight with M$ will probably cost arm or a leg....

This is where the story begins. I'm not going to summarize what happened. I'm going to give you all the information so you can make up your own mind.

  1. The first set of emails are between Dec 1, 2005 and Mar 30, 2006. They culminate in a teleconference between Craig Symonds (the General Manager for Visual Studio), Grant Drake, Jason Weber (who doesn't say a word) and myself.
  2. The second set of emails are between March 31, 2006 and Apr 17, 2007. They culminate with Jason finally letting me know which license I'm supposedly in breach of (the Express EULA). I'm still none the wiser about which clause.
  3. Finally I receive two letters (delivered by motorcycle courier) from Microsoft's UK lawyers. For the first time ever I am told which exact clause I'm supposedly in breach of. The second letter lets me know that they are reading my weblog and the TestDrivenUsers group.

Oh Netbeans is back!

I was searching for another java related podcast and found Netbeans podcast (where is Eclipse podcast???) thinking to myself the pain of trying out Netbeans 3 a while ago. What can it do differently? WAIT! After listen to the Netbeans podcast by Roumen and Gregg I tried NB 5.5 --- and WOW! All the the NB's plug-in are at NO COST!

I currently use Eclipse at home (WSAD @ work) which works out pretty well with same key-shortcuts, l&f. I wasn't sure if I want to "change", but Netbeans makes it pretty easy to try it out! 1) convert project from Eclipse 2) has an option to map the same key-shortcuts!!! but I do miss local history...which is coming in NB 6.

Building GUI, Matisse in Netbeans is pretty easy (missing springlayout???), Eclipse has some 3rd-party plug-in that works okay... the best one is Windowbuilderpro by Instantiations supports for Swing, SWT and GWT, but at a cost :-)

One plug-in, I like the best in NB is Enterprise Pack; a working UML is a very useful tool which is not ~perfect~ in Eclipse. no no no I am not jumping off Eclipse's ship yet, but I hope Eclipse can step up... I haven't done a full project with Netbeans so I can't say which tool is "better". All this is a very healthy competition in the open source world ;-)

"Rules of engagement" on the street

FBI Offers $50,000 Reward For Information Leading To An Arrest

http://cbs2chicago.com/topstories/local_story_142110742.html

some photos from fox news

I guess there is no "rules of engagement" on the street. They got gun and they used it... If you read most of the SOP (standard operating procedures) for bank it says to give up the money as long as "you" ask for it; well I think I simplified it a little. It's bad business to have ANYONE hurt or died on your bank (or store), but of course these 3 guy didn't think much of it. I hope they catch them soon.

BTW, south-side of chi town is not exactly a push-over ... well you can read the local paper
I found striking similarities between what is happening in black communities across the United States and what is happening in a full-fledged war zone in Iraq. The major difference is that far more black children are dying in Chicago than Chicago soldiers are dying in Iraq. -- By Phillip Jackson

I don't really agree with the comparison but it gives you an idea of the area. It's just sad that hard working people had to get hurt (or died).

what do I know... Iamnobanker
